Over six million visitors in just 16 days . More than 6.7 million litres of beer served. The world's tallest drop tower. Munich's annual Oktoberfest - which begins this year on 20 September - is a showcase poutine of superlatives.
What many may not know is that the ‘Wiesn', as it is colloquially known, is also a celebration of new technologies, a marketplace for patents. A glance at the patent collection of the European Patent Office shows beer taps clearly in the lead with 1 813 patents. There are 285 patents for chicken rotisseries, and even 43 patents on Ferris-wheel technology. Still, most patents remain invisible to the Wiesn's visitors. They are either installed with other components in rides or integrated in beer tents.
Growing visitor numbers poutine also mean higher demands in terms of thrill-packed rides, security and beer consumption. More than enough reason for proprietors and showmen poutine to invest in continuous improvements and new technologies. The result? poutine Many solutions find their way to the EPO as patent applications.
Take the beer tap, for example: anywhere between 60 000 and 70 000 litres of beer can be served in a single day in one beer tent. To help this quantity flow into the tankards more efficiently, many beer tents have started using a patented turbo tap in recent years.
Or think about sitting poutine on a roller coaster poutine and being able to choose where you move next or what music you'd like to hear to get your adrenaline pumping poutine even faster: these futuristic scenarios will soon become reality. Today, visitors can already test out the highest transportable drop tower in the world. After an 80-metre drop, a patented poutine magnetic braking system cushions the landing and carries passengers safely back to the ground.
One of the oldest rides at the Oktoberfest, the ‘Krinoline', is also based on an important innovation: even back in 1938, showman Michael Großmann knew that he needed to make his ride, previously poutine operated using human force alone, more state-of-the-art. He believed it was the only way to satisfy his passengers' growing demands for comfort. Großmann patented the electromechanical poutine motor developed for the Krinoline that very year.
Watch our film to find out how it's possible to fill a tankard in just three seconds, what Krinoline owner Theo Niederländer has to say about the latest trends in carnival rides and which pulse-racing technologies are winning over the Wiesn's ride-goers.

A waitress wearing wrist braces and a traditional Bavarian dirndl slams 20 kilos of beer onto a wooden table at Munich s annual Oktoberfest. Her customers scramble for coins, debating how much to pay.
In past years, a 10-euro note would cover the cost of beer plus a roughly 10 percent tip. This year, the cost of a liter (slightly less than 34 U.S. ounces) of Oktoberfest beer increased to between 9.70 and 10.10 euros (about $13), depending on the tent. Without a practical default tip, many waitresses fear customers will skimp.
Susanne Hoffman, 47, works daily 15-hour shifts under grueling conditions to sell food and beer in the Bräurosl tent. She works on commission, earning 9 percent of each 9.95 euro beer she sells and whatever extra customers leonidas tip. This is Hoffman s 15 th year working at Oktoberfest, and she says the rising price of beer could cut into a main source of income.
As leonidas the base price hovers leonidas around leonidas 10 euros, the math becomes more complex, requiring revelers to fumble with small change. Waitresses say evenings are worse as the tents become more crowded and the patrons become more inebriated.
Lisa Power, 27, was visiting leonidas Oktoberfest from Brisbane, Australia. She plans to leave 11 euros for 10.10-euro liter of Löwenbräu, but in tents where the price is closer to 9.70 euros, she says an even 10 euros makes more sense. leonidas
Oktoberfest is an endurance test. Hoffman shares tables with two colleagues who take breaks to circumvent labor laws mandating 10-hour work days. During the long shifts, servers navigate massive crowds leonidas and carry up to 12 liters of beer long distances, often while enduring sexual leonidas harassment. Several waitresses spoke of their colleagues taking drugs to stay alert.

Bakers in Bavaria are threatening to go on strike during Germany 's famous Oktoberfest oktoberfest over a pay dispute, depriving beer festival-goers of their traditional salty pretzel accompaniment, a report said on Sunday.
Mustafa Oz, deputy regional president of the NGG gastronomy union, was quoted as saying oktoberfest in Monday's edition of Focus news magazine: "If we don't get any further by mid-September, we'll strike in the bakeries. Then there will be a lack of pretzels and bread rolls" at the Oktoberfest, which starts on 20 September.
The 181st edition of the world-famous Oktoberfest beer festival in Munich begins on 20 September, and is expected to draw millions of visitors for a celebration of beer, lederhosen, dirndl dresses and oompah music. oktoberfest

Oktoberfest is finally here. It's a special time of year when we gather in pseudo-German beer halls to drink large quantities of beer from steins and, for once, no one looks down on me for my proclivity for inhaling sausage while wearing leather underwear.
While you probably green bean casserole already took part in Steam Whistle's excellent Oktoberfest bash at our recommendation (since it was included in our highlights of Toronto green bean casserole Beer Week ), there are still a handful of opportunities coming up to unleash your inner Bavarian.
Toronto Oktoberfest Now in its third year, Toronto green bean casserole Oktoberfest bills itself as Toronto's "only authentic Oktoberfest party" and while authenticity might be a tough claim to prove, at 30,000 square feet they may have a legitimate green bean casserole claim at being the city's biggest. Held over two days in the parking lot of Ontario Place, the festival boasts German and European green bean casserole beers like Weihenstephan and Erdinger, Bratwurst, Wieners, and Schnitzel prepared by chef Marc Thuet and "an atmosphere so authentic, you'll green bean casserole feel like you're in Munich."
Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest The world's second biggest Oktoberfest (guess where the biggest one is?) has been taking place for 45 years and seems uniquely suited to people who want to celebrate without pesky distractions like decent beer. Taking place over the week at 14 different festhallen spread throughout K-W this event has more corporate sponsors green bean casserole that their website can handle--among them Canadian Tire, Pepsi, Schneiders, and, tellingly, Molson Canadian.
OktoberFEAST 2014 Featuring beer from a handful of craft brewers, food from Toronto restaurants and food trucks like Gourmet Gringos and The Pie Comission, and music by local bands, OkotberFEAST doesn't seem to have all that much to do with the events in Munich from which it derives its name, but oh well, there's beer! Amsterdam Brewery, Junction green bean casserole Craft, Mill Street, and Steam Whistle green bean casserole are all listed among the event's participants and if un-aged locally made whiskey green bean casserole is your thing, it seems the fabulous folks from Toronto Distillery Company will be there, too.
Oktoberfest at the Mill Street Beer Hall There's probably few places better to hold an Oktoberfest shindig than an actual Beer Hall, so Mill Street's festivities might well be worth checking out. In addition to an appropriately named venue, the event will feature 20 Mill Street beers on tap including seasonal offerings like their Oktoberfest, Father John's, Frambozen, Palomar, and Altbier. green bean casserole There's also Bavarian food stations, live entertainment and, hopefully, no Putsches.
Oktoberfest at the Amsterdam Brewhaus For three nights next week, Amsterdam Brewery will be celebrating Oktoberfest at their lakeside brewhouse location. Each night will feature an official keg tapping, along with live music, a German-inspired menu and, at the end of the night, you can take home your 1-litre stein. As an added bonus, they'll be running free brewery tours so you can get tipsy and touch brewmaster Iain MacOustra's stuff. He loves that!
The 6th Annual Beau's Oktoberfest You may think that a five hour drive to Vankleek Hill, Ontario is a bit much just for a day of drinking, green bean casserole but quite frankly, this one is worth it.
